Saugus Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree Announces Partnership with Aggregate Industries, Benefit to Parks, Recreation

(Saugus, MA) February 15, 2017 – Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree is pleased to announce that the Town of Saugus has partnered with Aggregate Industries North East Region following successful negotiations of a land reclamation agreement for the Quarry Site on Route 99. To complement the agreement, Aggregate Industries will provide monthly grant accommodations to the Town to help enhance the community’s parks and recreation.

These monthly gifts will be used to benefit outdoor and indoor park and recreation facilities, as well as help fund parks and recreation programs within the Town of Saugus. As part of this granting process, the Town will receive a minimum of $36,000 annually, plus additional fees per truck load that may reach more than $100,000 in total each year.

Town Manager Crabtree, the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, and Town Meeting Members all  supported recent efforts to build a brand-new playground at Veteran’s Elementary School, park and playground at Bristow Street Park, and new tennis courts at Belmonte Middle School. Aggregate Industries’ monthly gifts will help further these efforts to better the parks and recreation within the community.

“One of my biggest priorities as Town Manager has been to improve the parks and playgrounds within the Town of Saugus,” said Crabtree. “This partnership with Aggregate will help us achieve that goal. We are so thankful for their generosity, and we look forward to working with them and further bettering our community over the next several years.”

The land reclamation agreement will provide a process for filling a 60-acre quarry with clean fill over time, as well as allow Aggregate Industries to work cooperatively with the Town over the next year to produce and develop a master plan for the site that will lead to zoning amendments to encourage mixed-use development.

Current zoning for the site allows contractors yards, auto body work, automotive sales, commercial garages, self-storage facilities, and warehouse operations. Under the new agreement, Aggregate Industries has agreed not to pursue any of these uses. Within one year they will produce a master plan encouraging mixed uses and comprehensive site planning for buffer zones and pedestrian access and circulation systems.
