Saugus Issues Dangerously Cold Weather Advisory This February 3rd Weekend

(Saugus, MA) February 3, 2023 – The following is an important message from Saugus Town Manager Scott Crabtree:

Massachusetts and Saugus are bracing for continued conditions of a dangerously cold airmass that’s expected to blast the region with brutal wind chills this weekend.

The National and local weather services are forecasting an arctic "cold front" will usher in a bitter blast today, Friday. Temperatures will fall steadily through the daylight hours with a strong northwesterly wind making for wind chills down to -15F by sunset. This evening, the wind can gust upwards of 45 mph.

The Arctic blast hits in full force tonight and Saturday, breaking records as the High builds west of New England. Actual temperatures bottom out well below zero at night and only recover into the low teens during the daytime, while the wind chill nears 30 below zero Saturday morning.

Clouds will mix with some sunshine on Sunday, February 5, as temperatures rebound significantly, continuing above average with some sunshine Monday afternoon.

Due to the low temperatures and strong wind gusts, there is an increased risk for hypothermia and frostbite for certain populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, the elderly, and young children. Cold weather may also exacerbate health issues in high-risk populations.

The Town of Saugus is advising all residents to take precautions, including reminding them to check in on older adults and people with disabilities.

Any downed wires should be considered live. If you see downed wires, please call 911 immediately.

In the event of severe power outages or heating issues, emergency shelter will be activated if needed. Anyone in need of these or any emergency services should contact Saugus Emergency Management at 781-231-4175, or call 911.

Please be safe during this dangerous cold winter weather and check in on your family and neighbors. Our Police, Fire, Emergency Management, and Public Works Departments and our Emergency Medical Services are here to assist the residents of Saugus in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to call.

Be Safe and Thank you!
