(Saugus, MA) January 31, 2018 – Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree and Fire Chief Michael Newbury are pleased to announce the promotion of long-time Saugus Firefighter William Cross III to Acting Lieutenant.
Lieutenant Cross, who holds his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University, has served on the Saugus Fire Department for almost 24 years. He was sworn into his new role on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 with members of the department, Town Hall staff, family, and friends in attendance to show their support.
“I am proud to appoint Lieutenant Cross and I wish him the best of luck in this new and challenging role,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “I have no doubt that he will continue to be an enormous asset to our public safety department and to the residents of Saugus.”
Lieutenant Cross is a 2008 recipient of the Medal of Valor for his rescue of a double amputee while he was off-duty.
“It couldn’t happen to a better guy and it definitely is the right time in his career and he has the right amount of experience in firefighting to be a front-line supervisor,” said Fire Chief Newbury. “He is ready and he is prepared and I think the department will be better for it.”
Cross has been married to his wife, Tracy, for nearly 24 years. They have three sons together: Andrew, 22; Patrick, 20; and Joseph, 17.
“I am thrilled to be serving as a Fire Lieutenant in Saugus, and I think I have the greatest job in the world,” said Cross. “When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, and that’s how I feel.”
