Fuel Dispenser Upgrades Underway at Public Safety Building, DPW

(Saugus, MA) August 15, 2018 – Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree is pleased to announce that upgrades to the fuel dispensers at the Department of Public Works and the Public Safety Building are underway to ensure the systems’ reliability, consistency, and cost-efficiency.

The upgrades, which were approved by Town Meeting earlier this year, is part of an ongoing effort to continue to make capital infrastructure improvements throughout the community.

This $160,000 investment includes the replacement of approximately 18-year-old gas pumps that were no longer repairable with brand-new, submersible pumps for both diesel and gasoline tanks. Full cabinet dispensers and all accessories for the diesel and gasoline tanks will also be included as part of the project.

Recently, a trench was dug outside the Public Safety Building to install conduits for the new system and electrical work is underway to remove the existing circuits and install new wires. Similar work began at the Department of Public Works this week. The project is on schedule to be completed by the beginning of September.

“The fuel pumps and dispensers at the DPW and Public Safety Building had been in need of replacement for some time now,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “This work will drastically increase the reliability of these systems, especially during emergency situations like snowstorms and extreme weather events.”

The fuel dispensers provide gas for vehicles from a wide variety of Town departments, including Police, Fire, Public Works, Building Maintenance, Youth and Recreation, the Senior Center, Inspectional Services, custodial, Conservation, Solid Waste and Recycling, the Schools, and more.

The Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, and Town Meeting demonstrated its support for this important community investment earlier this year during a Special Town Meeting, during which members voted in favor of the fuel dispenser upgrades for both the DPW and Public Safety Building as part of the Town’s priorities and overall identified capital infrastructure needs.

“I would like to thank the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, Town Meeting, and residents of Saugus for their continued support of these important community initiatives,” concluded Town Manager Crabtree.
