Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree Announces Saugus, Revere Awarded Additional $800,000 for Route 1 Improvement Project through Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Transportation Construction Grant

(Saugus, MA) June 23, 2021 – Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree is pleased to announce that the Town of Saugus and the City of Revere have been awarded an additional $800,000 through the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC)’s Community Mitigation Fund Joint Transportation Construction Grant for improvements to Route 1.

“We are grateful for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s continued support of our community and its shared vision with the City of Revere to help mitigate traffic and congestion along the Town’s most traveled roadway, which will improve safety for the residents and visitors of Saugus,” said Town Manager Crabtree.

Saugus officials have spent years researching and identifying traffic and overall infrastructure improvement needs on Route 1 and Route 99. In preparation of the Encore Boston Harbor casino in Everett and the current traffic congestion on Route 1 and Route 99, Saugus officials teamed up with the City of Revere and applied for funding assistance from the MGC to begin making necessary capital improvements to this well-traveled infrastructure.

The MGC supported Saugus and Revere’s plan and awarded the communities a Joint Transportation Planning grant of $150,000 in 2017 to engage a transportation planning specialist, $275,000 in 2018 to undergo preliminary design for elements of the Route 1 Improvement Project, and $425,000 in 2019 to make smaller transportation improvements along Routes 1 and 99 that seek to mitigate traffic impacts from the Encore Casino.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission was created to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the gaming licensing process and in the strict oversight of all gaming establishments through a rigorous regulatory scheme. The Commission administers the Community Mitigation Fund to assist the host and surrounding communities in offsetting costs related to construction and operating of gaming establishments.

“Providing the residents and visitors of Saugus with safe and reliable infrastructure has and will continue to be a top priority of this administration,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “We look forward to continuing to work together with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and the City of Revere to make essential roadway improvements along these major arteries that will help alleviate existing traffic and offset anticipated traffic resulting from the increased volume of vehicles visiting the casino.”
