Historical Commission
Mission Statement
The mission of the Saugus Historical Commission is to identify, document, and protect Saugus' historic resources, to increase public awareness of Saugus' heritage and the value of historic preservation, and to do so with not only the guidance and council of the Massachusetts Historical Commission but also by interacting with other town boards and committees. In conjunction with the Massachusetts Historical Commission, it maintains a Cultural Resources Inventory of the Town, listing sites and structures having architectural, archeological, or historical significance. A copy of this Inventory can be downloaded here.
The Saugus Historical Commission endeavors to be a preservation information resource to all citizens of Saugus and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by means of research, public meetings, the press, and publications, and to educate the citizenry of Saugus' and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts regarding the breadth and importance of Saugus' cultural heritage.
In accordance with the Saugus Zoning By-Laws, the Historical Commission reviews all applications for demolition permits and retains a file of the photographs of properties to be demolished for the benefit of future generations looking to document the evolution of the Town. For further information, see the Demolition Permit form.
In September 2017, the Saugus Historical Commission dedicated the Round Hill Historic Site at the western base of Round Hill, the main feature on the Saugus Town Seal. The site is also the location for the Time Capsule commemorating the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Saugus.
