Preliminary Design For Elements of Route 1 Improvement Project Underway Through $275,000 Joint Transportation Planning Grant

(Saugus, MA) February 21, 2019 – Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree is pleased to announce that the preliminary design for elements of the Route 1 Improvement Project is underway, through a $275,000 Massachusetts Gaming Commission Joint Transportation Planning Grant awarded to the Town of Saugus and City of Revere.

The Town of Saugus and City of Revere were recently awarded the grant to help fund preliminary traffic design for elements of the Route 1 Improvement Project.

Saugus officials have spent years researching and identifying traffic and overall infrastructure improvement needs on Route 1 and Route 99. With the new Encore Boston Harbor casino undergoing construction in Everett and the current traffic congestion on Route 1 and Route 99, Saugus officials teamed up with the City of Revere and applied for funding assistance from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to begin making necessary capital improvements to this well-traveled infrastructure.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission supported Saugus and Revere’s plan and awarded the communities a Joint Transportation Planning grant of $150,000 in 2017 to engage a transportation planning specialist. Following months of additional research, the Town of Saugus and the City of Revere together applied for a second joint grant to fund preliminary design work on the roadways. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission approved the Town and City’s joint 2018 Community Mitigation Fund Application and awarded the Town of Saugus and City of Revere $275,000 last year.

“It is a top priority to continue to provide the residents and visitors of Saugus with the safest and most reliable infrastructure,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “We strive to continue to work together with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and the City of Revere to make essential roadway improvements along these major arteries that will help alleviate existing traffic and offset anticipated traffic resulting from the increased volume of vehicles visiting the new casino.”

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission was created to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the gaming licensing process and in the strict oversight of all gaming establishments through a rigorous regulatory scheme. The Commission administers the Community Mitigation Fund to assist the host and surrounding communities in offsetting costs related to construction and operating of gaming establishments.
