Residents, Town Officials Celebrate Brand-New Saugus Fire Engine During Unveiling Ceremony at Fire Department Open House

Town Officials Gathered to Celebrate Saugus' New Fire Engine on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018

(Saugus, MA) October 16, 2018 – Dozens of Saugus children, residents, Town officials, employees, and business owners gathered together to celebrate the Town’s brand-new fire engine at an unveiling ceremony on Saturday, October 13, during the Fire Department’s Open House.

Children donning firefighter helmets and clutching red balloons posed in front of the bright red, shiny new engine while parents eagerly snapped photographs.

Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree presented the state-of-the-art apparatus to the crowd, and applauded the elected and appointed Town officials, and the community for their continued support of critical capital investments such as this.

“I would like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to see and enjoy the Town’s brand-new fire engine,” said Town Manager Crabtree, who was joined by Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta, Selectmen Jennifer D’Eon and Mark Mitchell, and Fire Chief Michael Newbury. “This exciting new public safety response vehicle will dramatically benefit the community and its residents for years to come.”

Town Manager Crabtree credited the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, and Town Meeting for their support and approval of this $695,000 investment. The engine, Crabtree said, is part of an ongoing effort to make public safety a priority with these capital improvements throughout the community.

This new engine, which replaces a 22-year-old truck, will continue to prioritize the safety of the residents of Saugus and the Town’s first responders.

This Pierce 1250 G.P.M Pumper built on an Enforcer chassis was designed specifically for the Town of Saugus based on the Town’s and Fire Department’s needs and goals. It is fully furnished with all the necessary tools and equipment, including hoses, nozzles, breathing apparatus, a hydrant wrench, a lock removal kit, a voice-amplifying communication system, various extinguishers, and much more. It is stationed at the Saugus Fire Department at the Public Safety Building, located at 27 Hamilton Street, Saugus.

The Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, and Town Meeting demonstrated its support for this important community investment last year during the 2017 Annual Town Meeting, when members voted in favor of the new fire engine as part of the Town’s priorities and overall identified capital infrastructure needs.

“I would again like to thank the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, Town Meeting, and residents of Saugus for their continued support of these important community initiatives such as this. None of this would be possible without their advocacy,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “It is amazing what we can accomplish when the community is working together and speaking in one voice.”

The unveiling ceremony was held during the Fire Department’s annual Open House, which commemorates October as National Fire Safety Month. The Open House is aimed at teaching families fire safety and prevention practices, such as “stop, drop and roll,” planning escape routes, and how to crawl safely through a smoke filled room.
